Vineyard Philosophy

Believing strongly that wine is made in the vineyard, rather than in the cellar, our goal at Whispering Horse is to produce terroir-driven wines that capture the unique place in which our vines grow. We also hold strong convictions regarding responsibility to respect the environment and ensure our land is mindfully farmed. Therefore, all of our practices, from varietal selection to disease control programs, are guided by the sole principal of minimal intervention.

The health of our vineyard has largely been achieved by our decision to plant only those varietals that are well suited to grow in our terroir, which is a cool-climate with a relatively short growing season. This resulted in us selecting many lesser-known French-American hybrid varietals that are early- to mid-ripening, cold-hardy, and strongly resistant to disease, considerably reducing our need to spray. We are also committed to encouraging biodiversity by allowing natural vegetation to grow between the rows and under the vines, as well as co-planting different grape varietals in small plots across our vineyards. Today, we remain in a constant dialogue with our terroir by listening and learning, which ultimately guides all of our current farming practices.
